As some scholars have noted, the plants depicted in the miniature do not appear to be basil, but perhaps burnet saxifrage, also known as pimpernel (Pimpinella saxifraga L.).
The basil depicted in this illumination differs from other depictions of basil in other manuscripts of the Tacuinum sanitatis.
